Late last night, I finished “The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks. As I read the last few lines I was overcome with so much emotion that I couldn’t contain myself so I began to cry. It was wonderful
This is such a great book, and Nicholas Sparks is an excellent writer. Sometimes writers feel the need to give a plethora of details to help “paint the picture” that they want you to see, but not Sparks. He let the story unfold in a way that I was able to get completely wrapped up in it, and I was never distracted by his writing. The character development was great, and I felt as if I was part of the story instead of simply reading it. I connected with the characters, too. I wasn’t able to connect at as deep a level as I would have liked, but I’m not complaining!
By no means is this book considered light reading, but I wasn’t bogged down with doom and gloom either. I experienced love, heartbreak, joy, and gut-wrenching sadness, but none of these overtook the other. Sparks is very good at maintaining a balanced mood throughout the book. I suppose that could be a good or bad thing.
All-in-all this was an excellent read. I am left wanting to be a better person, and I believe that is how it should be. I don’t think a book does its job unless it invokes some sort of change in the reader.
*DISCLAIMER* This book is SO much better than the movie. So, no matter how you felt about the movie, I still recommend this book to you!
